How to File for Divorce in Florida: The Step-by-Step Roadmap

Filing for divorce in Florida — legally called a Petition for Dissolution of Marriage — starts with meeting the state’s residency rule, then filing the right paperwork in the county where you or your spouse lives. From there, the other spouse has to be formally served, financial disclosures get exchanged, and you work through the big issues: property, debt, timesharing if you have kids, and support. The process looks very different depending on whether both spouses agree on the terms or not.

That’s the real fork in the road. An agreed, uncontested case can move quickly and stay entirely out of a courtroom; a contested one can stretch on for months. If you and your spouse are even mostly on the same page, mediation is usually the fastest and least expensive way to get from “filing” to “final judgment.”

Miller Mediation works for both spouses together to help them reduce conflct, save time, minimize drama, and avoid wasted legal fees.
